Choosing a new home for your loved ones is an important decision. We, at Bertinaley Care Ltd strive to make this process as easy for you as we can. We have prepared some key questions which you may wish to ask yourself when choosing a new home.

Although many people can feel worried and overwhelmed at the prospect of moving to a care home, once settled, the benefits and the possibilities are clear for all to see!

1. What kind of home is it?

a. Does it offer the right level of care? Such as nursing?
b. Will it provide all future care needs?
c. Will relatives / the resident be involved in decision making?
d. Is there a visiting dentist / optician / GP?
e. What types of activities are there?

2. Where is the home located?

a. Is it in the country or city – is it in a similar location to your current location?
b. Is it easy / convenient for friends and family to visit?
c. Is there a garden our outside space where residents can get some fresh air?

3. First Impressions?

a. Did you receive a warm welcome by the staff?
b. Is the atmosphere homely and friendly?
c. Is the home clean and tidy?
d. Does the home smell nice?
e. Do the residents seem well cared for?

4. Communal Areas?

a. Is there more than one room where residents can meet friends and family?
b. Is there a quiet room?
c. Wheelchair accessibility
d. Sufficient handrails?
e. Are there adequate toilet facilities and are they within easy reach or communal spaces?


5. What are the bedrooms like?

a. Can residents bring their own furniture and personal possessions?
b. What was the standard of décor?
c. Do the rooms have en-suite facilities?
d. Do rooms have television and phone sockets?
e. Can residents lock their own doors?
f. Do the rooms have a call system to alert staff?

6. Menus and meal arrangements?

a. Can residents eat when they want to?
b. Can you choose to eat in your own room?
c. Can you choose who to sit with while eating?
d. Is there a menu choice for each meal?
e. Are residents consulted by the chef on their likes and dislikes?
f. Can special diets be catered for?
